MYRL announces the CROSS-WORLD GAMING PROJECT, to bring immersive storytelling to virtual worlds
London, October 17 2008 - Following the successful launch of the social gateway approach to managing activity across multiple virtual worlds, Myrl has announced today that they have started working on a cross-world gaming platform.
The number of social virtual worlds is growing rapidly and users of these worlds can enjoy today a wide range of immersive environments online. However, contrary to game oriented virtual worlds, social virtual worlds do not structure user participation and this has a huge impact on the audience activity. While the lack of structure is great for 10% of the users who have the creativity and the time to build their own narrative, it isn’t ideal for the 90% of them who do not but would anyway love to join a richer, more immersive experience.
Too many potential users don’t know what to do once they are inside a virtual world. The result? They do not log in, or if they do, they do not return after the first time.
“There’s something missing in this space and that’s storytelling” commented Francesco D’Orazio Founder and CEO of Myrl, “Virtual Worlds represent a huge opportunity for the entertainment and the marketing industry. They can be effectively used as areas and/or levels of a huge hybrid gaming system that brings together virtual worlds, real spaces and the web to build compelling immersive experiences, similar in a way to being inside their own movie or personal adventure.”
Now Myrl wants to bring the power of storytelling to virtual worlds building a platform that will allow generating, managing and experiencing storylines which unfold across multiple virtual worlds, the web and the real spaces in real time.
Outlining the goals of the project Mr D’Orazio continued “We want to add a gaming layer to the virtual worlds space by providing a tool that will help generating and experiencing various kinds of storylines, from simple user-generated paths to explore different spaces according to a specific theme to games, treasure hunts and alternate reality games across virtual worlds, real spaces and the web. It’s a tough challenge because there are no technological standards but the opportunity is there, we have the vision and the rest of the community is thrilled as much as we are at the idea of providing cross-world and cross-platform immersive experiences”.
